We started off our day with a walk to school to watch the girls in a walkathon. The whole school participated and the classes started together but each child was able to do the 1km circuit at their own pace. They all wore white T-Shirts and each time they completed the 1km route, their cards were stamped and their T shirts were sprayed with a water-soluble colour. By the end of the race, they were almost unrecognizable for their hair, hats, and T-Shirts were a rainbow of colours. I think the Cotton girls must have inherited the competitive spirit from their forebearers, as they completed between 8-9 km. What a great school activity, the girls had a blast.
In the afternoon we took an Uber to the Canberra Botanical Gardens. A lovely place with so many exotic native plants. Sometimes the temperatures drop to -9 in the winter so it not an ideal place for some tropical plants. We were impressed with the diverse and colourful bird population, multi coloured parrots and Cockatoos. Besides the birds there is a very robust reptile population, mainly lizards. We were watching for snakes which were in hiding but the lizards did give us a few scares.
We chatted with a restaurant worker while waiting for our Uber, he told us his minimum wage was $38, $36 for weekends and holidays $52.
Totally enjoying Australia, the people are fantastic, so polite, friendly and helpful. Such an awesome country.
