17 Cascades Women's Prison

November 15th, 2022

When we looked out the window this morning it was spilling rain. This was our Hop on Hop Off tour day. We walked down to the meeting spot wearing our rain gear and wishing for umbrellas. We took the best seats we thought on the top of the bus. We should have known when the driver had to wipe off our seats and gave us the plastic raincoats that it was not going to be a toasty warm trip.  Our first stop was the Cascade Women’s Prison. This was a very sad place. We were told about the hardship and cruelty these women had to endure. Since we were by now very chilled, we could feel just one bit of what they had to go through in this terrible place. Some of these female convicts had babies while in prison and the babies were taken from them at 6 months and placed in orphanages. They told us about 60% of the babies died. The women endured very hard work, terrible overcrowding and unbelievable hardship.

On the next leg of our tour, we basked in the warmth of a heated bus. Next stop was the Australian Museum. Lovely exhibits and great information. Our last stop was the Botanical gardens. What a lovely place, with shrubs, trees, flowers, herbs and vegetables. Really enjoyed it. Upon our arrival back at hotel we were still dreaming of down jackets.
