12 Biking Rottnest

November 9th, 2022

This morning we caught the city train out to B Shed on the Fremantle waterfront. We took the Express Ferry to Rottnest Island where the famous quokkas live. We were told that we need not return back to Veronica’s if we hadn’t taken a selfie with a quokka.

We rented E bikes to tour the 11 km length of the island. Cathy is an expert biker and took to them like a fish to water, myself on the other hand had some problems adjusting. Taking into consideration I last rode a bike a little less than 50 years ago, it was a steep learning curve. The first 2 or more km were a bit problematic with Cathy using all her teaching and encouraging skills to get me going. I just kept thinking how hard the road was and how I would do Tasmania on crutches. In time I realized there was just something not right and we cycled back to the shop. My chain was off!! After that I was off to a much better start and I graduated from needing training wheels to actually wheeling along. I gained a bit more skill until the chain came off again. Some fellows helped get me on the road again and we made it back to the bike shop in fairly good shape but I was glad to see the last of the bike. The Island is lovely but I didn’t take many pictures as I was concentrating on staying alive. Most pictures are Cathy’s as she was quite comfortable to enjoy the sights.
